Essential Oil vs Carrier Oil: What Is the Difference?

An essential oil is a highly concentrated oil taken from the leaves, flowers or peel of a plant, usually by steam distillation. A few drops are enough, and it is too strong to put directly on the skin.

A carrier oil is a mild oil pressed from seeds or nuts, such as almond or sesame oil. It can be used on its own, and it is used to dilute essential oils so they are safe to apply. In simple words, rosemary oil is the active oil, and almond or til oil is the base you mix it with.

Uses of Essential Oils

  • Hair and scalp care: mix 2 to 3 drops of an essential oil such as rosemary into one teaspoon of a carrier oil, massage it into the scalp, and leave it for an hour or overnight before washing.
  • Homemade hair oil: add a few drops of rosemary oil to a bottle of almond, sesame or black sesame oil to make your own blend for regular oiling.
  • Body massage: carrier oils like sesame, mustard and almond oil are used for full body massage, and a drop or two of essential oil can be added for fragrance.
  • Dry skin: a few drops of sweet almond oil on damp skin after a bath helps keep it soft in winter.
  • Aroma: add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser or a bowl of hot water to fill a room with a fresh smell.

Safety Tips for Using Essential Oils

  • Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before putting them on skin or scalp.
  • Do a patch test first: apply a little of the mixed oil on the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours.
  • Essential oils are for external use only. Do not swallow them.
  • Keep oils away from the eyes, and out of reach of children.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a skin condition, ask your doctor before using essential oils.
  • Stop using any oil that causes redness, itching or burning.

How to Store Oils

Keep all oils in their bottles with the cap closed tightly, in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and heat. Light and air make oils lose their smell and turn stale faster. If an oil starts to smell sour or very different from when you bought it, it is time to replace it.
